● how does... waterproof työJOINT ® bentonite waterstop system ?
1- it waterproofs the extraback (outside) of the ZONE around to the movement JOINTS regarding a
reinforced concrete structure.
2- it prevents to a liquid (often water) go through
- the MAIN WAY: the crevice formed by separation of two pours of concrete
- and the OTHER WAYS that are present in the STRUCTURE of the reinforced concrete JOINT
(see - section 2)
● from what ... is composed työJOINT ® bentonite waterstop system ?
1-
Bentonite:
it is the
ACTIVE/WATERPROOFING element of työJOINT® waterstop system.
It is granular natural sodium bentonite said of "FIRST stage" for the
immediate waterproofing. The mass of the dry bentonite of "FIRST stage" of työJOINT®
is 5 Kg/m approximately (50 % of the total).

SperrJOINT®40:
manufactured article in natural granular sodium bentonite with delayed hydration, works as
"SECOND stage" with the function of permanent and progressive POSTCOMPRESSOR (patent
pending) of the "FIRST stage" in bentonite.

is 5 Kg/m approximately (50 % of
the total)
3- Basic POLYSTRIP: strip of geotessile in polypropilene
4- Nails: for powder actuated tool to fix työJOINT® to the

● What is the POSTCOMPRESSOR "SperrJOINT® 40"
SperrJOINT®40
it is a plastic tube, in
blown extruded thin film, filled of sodium bentonite
granular natural and
sealed to the extremities.
1- the plastic of the tube is of the family of soluble plastic (made up of PVOH) with modified formula,
worked in microextrusion blown proces.
2- dimension of the tube: nominal diameter = 40 mms, - nominal length = 600 mms
3- nominal quantity of bentonite: Kg 1,25/m
4- locking up of head of the pipe: type hermetic with metallic CLIPS

how it works:
the plastic tube allows to the contained bentonite to begin to activate itself (expand) after
approximately 6 ÷ 8 days of continuous contact with the wet, and it allows to develop in
progressive way the total activation (total hydration and expansion) of työJOINT® in along time of
20 ÷ 30 days of continuous contact with the wet
● how ... it works työJOINT ® bentonite waterstop system ?
The
waterproofing (leak proofing barrier to the water) of the Movement Joint happens through työJOINT® bentonite waterstop
system, in Two constructive times, but without solution of continuity:
a - in Horizontal: before/during the construction of the foundation SLAB.
b - in Vertical: after the landfill of excavation of the
underground structure.

immediately.
The immediate waterproofing happens with the
hydration / EXPANSION of the alone granular natural loose sodium bentonite (of "FIRST stage") contained in
työJOINT® waterstop system, after the contact with the first wet. The bentonite mass "the FIRST stage" in
työJOINT® is of 5 Kg/m approximately (50 % of the total).
2- ææ HOW MUCH EXPANDS the granular loose bentonite in this phase?
It expands until the balance of the expansive forces:
a - in HORIZONTAL: until balancing of the passive force of foundation/structure build until the moment of the
first hydration / EXPANSION of the bentonite.
b- in VERTICAL: until balancing of the passive force of the landfill, "NOT still steadied/sedimented"
3- With the stabilization of the starting forces (the active / expansive force of the bentonite and the Low passive
forces of foundation / structure and of the landfill), the "VOLUME of RESULTANT BENTONITE GEL" (volume
occupied by the bentonite GEL of the first hydration) turn out to be significant/HIGH.
The bentonite has used surely a number greater than TWO, of its potential volumetric expansion in order to
reach the equilibrium of strengths; this is caused by "holes" of the landfill fresh made and caused by the low
compactness of the ground under the foundation due to the low cargo/weight of the structure that is in a
beginning step of the
building construction.

The main characteristic of
this first BENTONITE GEL is a low value
of expansive inner residual force with low
value of FINAL ELASTIC COACTION .
5-
The ELASTIC COACTION state
is the state in which an elastic solid is when it shows
distributed internal forces,
even if in absence of external sollicitations.
The value of the FINAL ELASTIC COACTION of BENTONITE GEL determines the level of SELFCOMPACTION of the
same GEL and indexes the RESIDUAL EXPANSIVE POTENTIAL.
The value of RESIDUAL EXPANSIVE POTENTIAL, is directly proporzional to the ability of the bentonite GEL to
tough out changes/significant volumetric deformations (as in the movement joints) with a practically unchanged
Permeability and unquestionable characteristics SURE barrier against the water .
6- the "first VOLUME of the granular natural sodium BENTONITE GEL of the MOVEMENT JOINTS", tends to modify
form/parameters, because of deformations/movements above all cut movements, correlated to growing of the
building load.
7- The bentonite contained in the POSTCOMPRESSORS of työJOINT® waterstop system, because of its
remarkable delay of hydration/expansion, enters in action when the "VOLUME of BENTONITE GEL of FIRST stage"
practically is stabilized and in phase of light reduction/thickening, caused by the building increased load and by
the settlement/sedimentation of the landfill.
8- A bentonite contained in the POSTCOMPRESSORS SperrJOINT®40, represented by 5Kg approximately of dry
bentonite (50% of the total ) for linear meter of Movement Joint, will have so an expansion cubic with an
extremely low value; so the expansion produced by the hydration of the bentonite of the POSTCOMPRESSORS,
supplies only a strong thickening of the first bentonite GEL produced from the granular bentonite unpacked,
being mechanically occluded other expansive holes.
9- The high density and the synergy of two GEL, give to työJOINT® bentonite waterstop system one high potential
expansive force that determines the stabilization of the TOTAL bentonite GEL, with a HIGH VALUE of a internal
FINAL ELASTIC COACTION .
10- The big BENTONITE GEL mass for linear meter of työJOINT® (supplied from 10 Kg/m approximately of total dry
bentonite) and the HIGH STATE of internal STABILIZED ELASTIC COACTION (determined by the
POSTCOMPRESSORS - SperrJOINT®40), give to työJOINT® bentonite waterstop system the suitable
characteristics in order to carry out the function of TOTAL barrier to the water when it is employed in
STRUCTURAL MOVEMENT JOINTS also with differentiates centimetrics movements in 3D (three directions).

in a sector.
A PLASTIC WATERSTOP applied in "RING" sketch

it does not work in 3D: its use for operation in 3D is a IMPROPER technical chosen

it does not compensate centimetrics cut movements.
- Sure LEAKS of water will be had: must be only verified if are small

LARGE.
The reasons:
- functioning designed with limit and inability to work in 3D
- Crevices and honeycomb
of the concrete,

shrinkage
around/under to the rebars(settling),

shrinkage
around to the same waterstop,
- not perfect splices/weldings
- bad application,
- damaging during the concrete casting.

by the separation of two near concrete cast that can
move among them in
3D
(in 3 direction)

the "barrier-waterstop" is
in contact (only in the
"main way of passage of the water") for a max height
of 2 cm approximately, with the two concrete
"shoulders" forming the movement joint. ONLY on
these TWO small areas the "barrier-waterstop" effects
its expansive force in order to realize a barrier to the
water at condition that "it does not existe" crevices
or
honeycomb
on the faces of the JOINT.
- the application is made by glueing on dry support.
- the amount of movement that the "waterstop" is able to
compensate with its
expansion, it is
nearly never indicated: this movement is supposed millimetric, unidirectional, horizontal and very
rarely in 3D (three directions).
Conclusion
the expansive hydrophilic rubber waterstop LEAKS OUT water: the water gets through the "other ways", it must be only check - in order each single application - if the WATER LOSS is little or BIG.

JOINT in concrete structure:
in the underground structures, the humidity and the temperature are
approximately constant, therefore:
1 - the movement of expansion-contraction practically tend to zero.
2 - the meaningful movement of contraction, is alone beginning and
has had to the cooling of the heat of the hydration of the second
concrete pour.
The movement of expansion or shrinkage of the stone materials
is approximately 10µ/°C/m
3 - the more important movement is the "cut" movement, had to the
settlement of the two contiguous structures foundations
(above all if with various weights): the mvement can arrive to some centimeter.

The two concrete structures forming the MOVEMENT JOINT, in the cargo phase and until the stabilization of the foundations, can have a 3 D relative movement between of them (in the three directions)



● ● The MAIN way of passage of the water: the crevice
To waterproof a movement joint means:
- to prevent that a liquid (often water) pass through the MAIN way:
the dynamic crevice formed by the separation of two concrete pours,
not jointed by "crossbar" or other, can move between them in 3D
(in 3 direction)
- to prevent that a liquid pass through the OTHER ways present in
the two reinforced concrete STRUCTURES of the JOINT
(sees some example in the photos below).
to know
the MOVEMENT JOINT of buried structures in groundwater in order to correctly waterproof
